How did you wind up involved with Poultrygeist?
I've been working with Troma at conventions and film fests for 5 years and have gotten to know Lloyd Kaufman pretty well. He encouraged me to get involved and when I saw they were filming I volunteered to work as a PA to see Kaufman's auteur theory in action. As Lloyd's nearly 60 and Troma doesn't make movies all the time I wasn't sure if It'd be my only chance to work with him.
What were your jobs on the set?
I worked on making props and effects, including a giant egg one of the chicken monsters hatches out of. Then I got assigned to security on the set. Since I was big, had done security before and Lloyd thought I was reliable I was one of the ones who got picked. I also played a customer who gets killed when "Demon Drumstick" rips out my throat. So I got to be directed by Lloyd.
Can you tell us a little bit about the area where the film was shot?
The main set was an abandoned McDonalds in one of the worst neighborhoods in Buffalo. I was told by locals the restaurant was the most robbed store in the US, was caught selling crack out the drive through and the health dept wanted them shut down. As security I got to meet a lot of gang members, crackheads and street people. Most were cool with us and since we were nice they were nice to us-thank god cause we were so damned lucky not to have any real incidents at that location.
What Troma alumni appear in-front of and behind the camera?
Well, Joe Fleishaker is in it. Tracy Mann. Ron Jeremy has a small role. Purple Pam is also appearing in it. Lloyd is in it as well as directing it-most of the production staff appear in the film at some point. Two of Lloyds daughters show up, Lisabeth and Charlotte. Gabe Friedman, who is the longest running regular emplyee at Troma-outside of Maris Hers (Michael's wife).
If you're allowed, can you tell us a bit why Debbie Rochon will not be appearing in the film?
Well, Debbie was going to do a cameo but she got into a bit of a situation with another performer in the movie. I'm not going to get into details, but I'll say it hinged on jealousy about Debbie getting more attention they they did (she deserves it more too) and some BS was started and Debbie walked cause it wasn't worth it to her. When Debbie left MANY people were upset, she is a pure joy to be around and I hope I get another chance to work with her in the future.
Without spoiling too much, can you tell us some details about the film?
Militaristic Fast food Company-The American Chicken Bunker-builds a fast food restaurant on an Indian burial ground and when one employee dies on site he triggers a curse that results in Indian/Chicken Zombies attacking the staff and customers. Very funny script, very gross, very bloody and un PC, in other words it's TROMA at their finest..
How much of the film will actually be a musical?
Um, whole thing as far as I know. Not sure how many songs there are but they are all pretty funny, there's dancing (Lloyd ATTEMPTS to dance) and there is a big chicken zombie dance number including a dance off between to chicken zombies.
There are rumors that Trey Parker and Matt Stone will be shooting cameos in LA. Do you know if this is true?
Yeah Trey, Matt amd Lemmy from Motorhead are all schedualed to do cameos in LA, time permitting.
Can you share any interesting behind-the-scenes stories with us?
Hmm, the "Making of " feature should be interesting. A couple got engaged on set, a grip tried to beat up the DP, building we used had a flooded basement repeatedly. Some many stories, so little sleep. Not enough bathing.
Overall, what do you think the fans' reactions to Poultrygeist?
People are really excited about it and I think it's justified. This may be one of the best, if not THE best things Troma has done, Friedman's script is hilarious. Good cast, talented crew and lots of enthusiasm mixed with much insanity.
Apart from you work with Troma, you also produced the indie-horror film Come Get Some. Can you give us some information on that?
Spent 2 1/2 years making that mostly on weekends. Still looking for distribution. Zombie/comedy hicksploitation micro-epic that's is a parody and a homage (French for Rip off) to all the zombies films I and the others involved grew up loving. Meanwhile I almost am finished with the sequel-Come Get Some More. ANy one morbidly curious about either can check out http://www.comegetsomethefilm.com
Anything else you'd like to mention?
Well, I worked on a little picture with some other indie guys in Texas called The Ancient that should be coming out soon that I'd like folks to see www.theancient-movie.com. Thank God for Lloyd Kaufman and Troma for inspiring and encouraging indie folks to get off their asses and make their own damned movies.
