Interview: Diana Silvio

The latest film from the Pittsburgh-based production company Kiss Of Death Productions, Meat For Satan's Icebox, has been supported by Lloyd Kaufman, who also has a cameo appearance. Diana Silvio, the producer of Meat For Satan's Icebox, recently answered a few questions for the site:

1. Tell us about Meat For Satan's Icebox

Meat For Satan's Icebox is about a secret black market operating in the "fictional" town of Satan Place where the filthy rich buy the fresh meat of teenage boys and girls like a deli from Hell. Once you are in Satan Place you either become one of them or they'll eat you alive (kind of like working for a big corporation, huh?).

The story focuses on Cindy Cavatelli's(Crystal Ann Jones) struggle to escape her troubled life. She has witnessed her mother's murder at the hands of the evil slaughter house workers, and she is being victimized by her disturbed father's lust. Because she refuses to surrender herself to the system's fiendish activities Cindy finds herself heading for the chopping block. Will she become Meat For Satan's Icebox or will she just weaken and become one of them?

2. How did Troma become involved with the film?

Lloyd Kaufman saw a trailer back in April 2002 while he was in Pittsburgh for a Tromafest at Oaks Theater. He was signing autographs at Incredibly Strange Video when the trailer was shown and it caught his attention. He liked what he saw wanting to talk to us further about the project. A few months after that he expressed an interest in being in the movie.

3. What involvement does Troma have with the film?

In September 2002 Lloyd came to Pittsburgh to be in the film. He played Dr. Fermin, a wacky gynocologist, who wants to purchase girls for a secret doctor's banquet.

Also, to make his part more complete, Lloyd came up with a clever additional scene which he will film in New York for us. He's the coolest!!!

4. What was it like working with Lloyd Kaufman?

What was it like working with a filmmaker whom I have admired for so many years? It was a dream come true. I have appreciated and loved Troma movies since I was old enough to stay up late and watch T.V. It was awesome to witness Lloyd at work. He claims he's not an actor, but he is brilliant! He brought so much to his character! He adlibbed some of the best lines in the movie. It is a treat to hear the words spring from his sweet lips! I think he brings to his character humor, zaniness and a creeping dangerous presence.

5. When can we expect to see Meat For Satan's Icebox completed?

The movie is scheduled to be completed by October 5, 2003 and the premiere will be at the Rex Theater in Pittsburgh sometime shortly after.

6. Are there any interesting production stories you'd like to share?

There were so many interesting situations that happened while we were in production! Some of them are so embarrasing I've been sworn to secrecy by all parties involved, but I will say, it involves blood, a girl, a guy and a compromising situation! Enough said.

Also, one of the more humorous situations occurred while we were filming in the woods on a private estate. It just happened that the estate owner was having a "special" pool party that day. All of her friends in attendance who were lounging by the pool were gay. Some of the pool side boys kept asking if we had any really pretty fellas working on the movie with us who wanted to come swim with them, and if they didn't have any trunks that was okay too. The actors decided it would be best if they stayed in the woods and ate the frozen corn dogs that were on the set instead of going up to the house to have them cooked. They even opted to pee in the woods instead of chancing the bathrooms.

Another funny story also took place in the woods. Just as the director called action a big furry spider dropped from a tree and fell into Crystal's cleavage. Needless to say, she is deathly afraid of spiders. She wanted to finish the scene but absolutely freaked out screaming and nearly ripping her clothes off as she ran away from the camera and toward the house. Yes, the action was caught on video!

One extremely stressful situation happened on the day we were filming with Lloyd. The actress who was scheduled to shoot with us called that morning to tell me that there was a serious car accident involving someone she knew and that she couldn't make to the set! There was no way we could rescedule for another day! It was now or never! I was in a very tight spot. At 5:00am I had to find two replacement actresses for the scene. It was sheer panic and chaos! I called over twenty-five actresses and NONE were able to make it! It was then I asked the woman doing hair and make-up if she wanted to do one of the parts. She was speechless and thrilled to work in a scene with Lloyd since she was such a huge TROMA fan. The second actress was the girlfriend of the special effects artist. The two girls were beautiful and talented. They brought so much energy to the set.

7. Anything else you'd like to mention?

There are a few production stills up on the web site: www.kiss-of-death-productions.com and soon the trailer, which had been shown at the Rex Theater and features Lloyd, will soon be up on the site as well. Check the web site for updates and information.
