Review: All The Love You Cannes

All The Love You Cannes! was quite possibly the longest time a Troma film sat on my "to buy" list. I strongly wanted to see it, but just never got around to picking it up. But when I finally did, I'll have to say that I strongly regretted waiting so long. The madness that went on with Troma during the 2001 Cannes Film Festival is something that definitely needed to be documented... and luckily, they had already planned to do an educational documentary at the time. Though it's original intentions do shine through, All The Love You Cannes! quickly becomes something else.

Starting off Lloyd Kaufman's voyage to France, showing examples on how filmmakers can save money on their own Cannes voyages, everything seems to be business as usual for Troma at Cannes. Lloyd takes us around to show some of the hot spots of Cannes and how to save money on accommodations, but that all changes as soon as the Troma volunteers begin their work of giving Troma publicity.

We quickly learn that there are two colliding forces at Troma at this time: Doug Sakmann, Troma's head of marketing and Scott McKinlay, the head of Troma's LA office (which is no longer open). They both have some very different views of how to promote Troma: Scott sets up a recycling center in the name of The Toxic Avenger for the Cannes crowd, while Doug goes out on the streets dressed as Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD and, as Scott puts it, "redefines the word obnoxious." The tension between them continues to escalate, as Scott gets more and more pissed about Doug's actions and eventually ends up in some childish fisticuffs.

There's a very large focus on the feud between the two Troma employees and to be honest with you, I'm honestly not too sure which side we're supposed to be on. I can see Doug's actions being something that would cause Scott to get fed up with his antics, but Scott comes off just as obnoxious, but in the smarmy asshole way, not the drunken attention starved way.  However, Doug also causes quite a bit of trouble with the staff of the Carlton, which could possibly be blamed for Troma's inability to reserve a room there the following year. The Troma Team sides with Doug, as he was not the one who started the fight, but it's tough to tell who honestly deserved to be championed at the end of it all.

Also featured in the documentary are some very interesting run-ins with the big name corporate studios, one of which leads to the funniest scene of whole film. Across the hall from the Troma office in the Carlton hotel is Warner Brothers and one of their employees has a curious little dog who wanders over to the Troma office several times. At one point, Lloyd chases the pooch around the office with his handycam laughing menacingly at it. It may not sound like it, but this segment is laugh-out-loud funny and my personal favorite scene of the documentary.

While All The Love You Cannes! may not be incredibly educational, as was it's original purpose, when you see what happened in 2001, you will not be surprised that the focus of the documentary was forced to change. However, there is quite a lot to be learned about the business that goes on outside of the glitz and glamour of the most prestigious festival featured in the film, it's just that the chaos that went on during the making of the documentary certainly was much more interesting. Set back and see just how out of control Troma's stay at Cannes in 2001 truly was.
