Review: Bacon Head
Reviewed by: Justin Channell

I'm a big fan of absurd and bizarre sketch comedy, such as Monty Python, Kids In The Hall, and Upright Citizen's Brigade. So when I read the plot synopsis of Bacon Head and heard it was in the same style, I went ahead and picked up a copy. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed.

Bacon Head is a collection of short black and white comedy sketches written, directed, and usually starring Ray Mahoney. Mahoney's band, The Angry Hippos, also star in the sketches and provide all of the music. The sketches include: "Land of the People Named Chris", where a man named Chauncey finds himself in a land that only inhabits people with the name Chris; "Tools Of Proctology Kitchen Utensils", which is actually a pretty funny commercial parody; "The Toast Police" follows a government organization who track down toast eaters like drug users; and several other sketches.

The main problem with Bacon Head is that the most of the jokes are too absurd or just too lame to actually work. Sure, Kids In The Hall, Monty Python, and Upright Citizens Brigade are all guilty of having sketches that followed the same suit, but Bacon Head only covers 90 minutes and they've covered an entire career. However, there are a few chuckles to be found in the film and a few sketches actually do work. The musical sequence "Quinlan The Detailing Tubbist" was pretty good and "Tools Of Proctology Kitchen Utensils" got a good gut-laugh from me. However, the sketches that last the longest, "Toast Police" and "The Bartholomew Brothers" are some of the worst. Neither really seem to have much of a point, however at least "Toast Police" is aware of the fact and uses it as a joke at one point.

The real highlight of the film is the score, performed by The Angry Hippos. It really helps the film move along and is somewhat reminiscent of the Danny Elfman score for Forbidden Zone. It's just a shame that the sketches aren't of the same quality. Bacon Head is worth renting, if you like sketch comedy movies, but don't expect too much.
