Review: Bloodsucking Freaks
Reviewed by: Justin Channell

In my original review for this film, I gave it a 1. However, after a few more watchings, I've decided to go back and re-review the film.

Bloodsucking Freaks has constantly been referred to as one of the most grotesque and disturbing titles in the Troma library. Lloyd Kaufman has mentioned on several occasions that he wouldn't ever consider distributing it in this day and age. The film is about an S&M theater known as Sardu's Theater Of The Macabre, where the owner, Master Sardu, with the assistance of his obnoxious midget servant Ralphus, tortures and kills women in front of an audience. Sardu promises the audience it's all fake and they believe it (maybe it's because the effects in the film are so poor). Sardu ends up kidnapping an opposing critic and a beautiful ballerina, whose boyfriend enlists the help of a corrupt detective to take down Sardu.

When I first saw Bloodsucking Freaks, I was incredibly bored. I somehow sat there uninterested while the film showed scene after scene of torture. Being this bored caused me to give the film the 1 rating I originally gave to it. However, one day, I decided to give it a second chance, which I'm glad I did. This time around, I could see the film's bizarre, satirical style and was able to laugh and be entertained.

Honestly, the best part of the production is Seamus O' Brien's performance as Sardu. He was a great actor, who unfortunately died after being stabbed in a robbery at his apartment. Louis de Jesus is an incredibly bad actor, but he approaches his role as Ralphus with enough energy to be very entertaining.

Fans of gore and sick humor should definately pick up Bloodsucking Freaks. However, I do suggest giving it a second view if you disliked it. Maybe you'll open up to like I did.
