After a four year long wait, Troma fans finally got what they had been salavating for: a decent Toxic Avenger sequel. On March 18th, not only did they get that, but they got a film that's close to being better than the original (take note that I said "close to being better"). Citizen Toxie is pretty much a love letter from Troma to their fans and past collaborators, as it features several cameos from Tromatic stars from the past and present. It's kind of like Troma's version of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, but at least with Citizen Toxie, you don't have to worry about stupid 15 year olds running around quoting it, without even knowing half of the jokes, since they haven't seen the previous View Askew films. Sorry for that little rant there... now on with the review.
Citizen Toxie opens up with an unbilled narration from Stan Lee, apologizing for the two previous sequels, proclaiming that "This is the Real Sequel." After that, Tromaville's School For The Very Special gets taken over by a terrorist group known as the Diaper Mafia, led by Tex Diaper(Trent Haaga). As with any troubles in Tromaville, The Toxic Avenger(David Mattey; voiced by Clyde Lewis) shows up to stop them, along with his ward and sidekick, Lardass(Joe Fleishaker). However, Tex sets off a bomb in the school, killing Lardass and several of the special students. Toxie manages to save two of them: Sweetie Honey and Tito The Retarded Rebel, who's wallowing in his teen, and retarded, angst by using drugs and masturbating in class.
But when the bomb went off, it somehow caused The Toxic Avenger, Sweetie Honey, and Tito to be in Amortville, the parallel universe of Tromaville, and The Noxious Offender, Toxie's evil doppleganger, to land in Tromaville. All sorts of craziness ensues as Noxie takes over Tromaville, including Toxie's blind wife Sarah(Heidi Sjursen) being pregant with two babies, from both Toxie and Noxie. Will Toxie be able to get back to Tromaville in time to save the day? Buy the damned DVD... I'm not spoiling it for everyone.
At first, I wasn't too sure if I liked Citizen Toxie. There were a lot of scenes that just didn't seem to set right with me. After a second viewing, I was in love with it. Troma fans will really find this as a treat, especially the cameos from past Troma stars, not to mention Corey Feldman(under the name Kinky Finklestein), the late Hank The Angry Drunken Dwarf, and the wonderful Randy and Jason Sklar(also under psuedonyms). The Sklar Brothers provide hilarious segments as news reporters throughout the film, which I found to be some of the funniest moments of the film, but they don't hold a candle to Hank The Angry Drunken Dwarf's performance as God. His comments about the Pope leave me rolling on the floor every time. Even Mitch Cohen, who played the original Toxic Avenger, and the original Melvin Junko, Mark Torgl, pop up in cameo appearances.
No self-respecting Troma fan can afford to miss this. However, a character who ends up being a talking severed head still doesn't set right with me, so I can't bring myself to give it a perfect score. But despite that small irk, this is one of the best Troma in-house productions. VERY highly recommended.
