When I first saw the Def By Temptation trailer, I was really interested. It looked like it had a very high production value for being a low-budget film. I had been wanting to see it for a while, so imagine my surprise when I found it setting at a cheap video store I frequent.
The film is powered by James Bond III, who has written, directed, produced, and starred in this film, the first Troma movie to feature an entirely African American cast. It's about a young priest named Joel(played by Bond) who goes to New York City to visit his actor friend K(Kareem Hardison) before he officially becomes a priest. They end up at a bar where a woman named Temptation(Cynthia Bond) frequents. After Joel ends up with her, a detective(Bill Nunn) warns K that men have been seen leaving the bar with Temptation and never were seen again. They head out to stop the evil succubus Temptation from leading Joel down the path, but Joel's constant flashbacks of his father begin to help him realize what Temptation is.
The trailer for this film looked great. I had heard very good reviews of it. However, I was dissapointed to find it was paced so slow, that I literally ended up falling asleep BOTH times I watched it. I wouldn't say it's a bad film, however; it's actually quite good. However, there just isn't much action and the pace is incredibly slow. One thing I was a bit surprised of was the lack of nudity. Judging by the last name of the lead actress, Cynthia Bond, she's more than likely related to director/writer/star/practically everything James Bond III, which could help to explain why. The special effects in the film are extremely effective, especially a scene where a television set eats Kareem Hardison. After I ended up purchasing a used video of the film, I discovered that the film has plenty of replay value and isn't as slow as I had remembered it. Because of this, I recommend you give it a few viewings to help it grow on you.
The only thing that stumps me is why James Bond III never went on to anything else. It seems like he disappeared after the making of Def By Temptation.
