Review: Frostbiter: Wrath of The Wendigo
Reviewed by: Justin Channell

A lot of people say that Troma movies tend to have a very comic book like atmosphere. That makes it fairly obvious as to why Troma picked up Frostbiter: not only is it based off of a comic book, but it's the closest thing I've ever seen to a live-action comic.

It's hunting season on a small island called Manitou Island. But what the hunters visiting do not know is that the island is inhabited by a demonic snow monster called the Wendigo. However, 100 years ago, an old man set up a circle of it's victim's skulls to keep it bay. Unfortunately, a very rude hunter named Gary (Ron Asheton of Iggy Pop and The Stooges) kills the old man and opens up the circle by mistake and the Wendigo is set free to terrorize a cabin full of hunters. It's up to Gary and Sandy, a young woman who is the new "chosen one" to stop the Wendigo.

I had heard some pretty good things about Frostbiter, including the very positive review from Alex Tozzi on this site. However, after finally seeing it, I regret to inform you that Frostbiter is actually pretty terrible. The dialogue is atrocious, which kind of makes sense, because the film is meant to be comic book-esque, but it creates some ridiculous moments. Ron Asheton seems to be the one who gets the most of the terrible lines, that or he's really that bad of an actor. One really bad aspect is the music, which tends to ruin a good many scenes, especially that thrice-damned "chili" song. The effects are decent at times, though all of the miniatures come off way too cheap and fake looking. One effect in particular that was very poorly executed is the bloody stump of a character who loses his hand. You can tell his hand is still under there... stumps don't tend to be hand-shaped either. The claymation used to bring the Wendigo to life is good, but nothing too stellar.

One really positive aspect is the photography of the film. There's a lot of really nice gelled lighting, a la Dario Argento's masterpiece Suspiria. Overall, I can think of many worse ways to spend the time you'll spend while watching Frostbiter, but it's still not a very good pick.
