In Lloyd Kaufman's very first feature length film, we are given the Olympics
as they have never been seen before! It's Man Vs. Woman! Who will come out
victorious? Will the women finally overthrow the men? Or will the men win
again and continue there winning streak?
When I watched this I noticed that there was no timecode on the tape, as the
ad said on the Troma Store site that there was. Now 'The Girl Who Returned'
is definately not your average Troma flick. Not that that's a bad thing,
it's just feels kinda weird seeing a movie directed by Lloyd Kaufman that is
truly an art house flick.
Any who, the story is about the women's Olympic team who are training to
overthrow the men. The men and women in this story live in two totally
different countries that lie side by side. No one has every crossed over to
the other besides for the Olympic event. One of the girls is fed up with her
women-only country and decides to run away to descover the men. She has
never encountered a man before. She finds at first that the men poke fun at
her for running away and they tease her. She runs deeper into their country
and encounters one man, whom she falls in love with. No one has every felt
this before. It is a new feeling to him and to her. Later, he leaves her and
she feels betrayed. She runs back home hoping to be excepted again into her
own society. She is, and the Olympics are held. So who wins? I can't tell
you, you'll have to watch it yourself and find out.
This is a very beautiful black and white film. The cinematography is well
shot and the story is really unique. The majority of the film is narrated by
a man. Some of the film moves a bit slow, but it adds to the feeling of a
society where there are no feelings of true love. Overall this is a good
film, but may not please all Troma fans because of the subject and the
non-Troma feel to it. But it is definately worth checking out to see how
Lloyd has evolved and where he started out from.
