One of the most highly-recognized films from Charles Kaufman's catalog is Mother's Day. The film is one of Variety's 100 highest grossing independent films and has been referenced as a horror classic by many. Shot at the same time and nearly the same location(there was only a river seperating them) as Friday The 13th, the film definately can back up that reputation.
The film follows three women who were college roommates. The self-proclaimed "rat pack" heads out for a "mystery weekend" every year. This year, one of them chooses to camp out in the woods. But what they don't realize is that the woods are inhabited by a pair of backwoods(but don't call them that... they think they're "cityfied") mama's boys, their crazed mother, and Queenie, her evil sister who she claims is lurking out in the woods. The crazed brothers kidnap the three and they find themselves fighting to escape alive.
Mother's Day is a fun little horror film. There's a few moments that make you wonder "what the fuck?", the plot's not exactly well-developed, and you constantly question the intelligence of the characters. But you can say the same thing about a lot of classic horror films. The cast is actually quite good and the effects are decent. If you know what you're in for, which is a fun early 80's horror film, you should get what you expect.
I wouldn't exactly call it a classic or required viewing, but I definately think Mother's Day is worth a watch by any horror fans, regardless of whether they're Troma fans or not.
