Review: Stuck on You!

After producing the supringly successful Squeeze Play! and continuing to find their audience with Waitress!, Troma continued it's work in the budding sexy-comedy field with Stuck On You!. Continuing the Troma fashion of basing films off of current events, Stuck On You! focused on the large amount of palimony cases that were present in the early 1980s.

Stuck On You! starts out with Carol Griffiths(Virginia Penta) and Bill Andrews(Mark Mikulski), a couple that were sharing a house together, until their relationship went sour. While in court over their palimony case, they're pulled aside by Judge Gabriel(Professor Irwin Corey), where they explain their story to him. But little do they know, he is actually an angel who is trying to regain his wings by getting their relationship back on track. While they tell them their story, he explains that they're having the same relationship problems that have existed all throughout history, even to historical figures such as Napoleon, Leonardo Da Vinci, King Arthur, Adam and Eve, and many others. When his stories do not seem to convince them well enough, he brings them into his own courtroom to show them the errors of their ways.

Of all of the sexy-comedies, I'd have to say that Stuck On You! has the best production value. However, the trademark Troma style of humor is still developing. This time around, the film plays out like a live-action cartoon, which fits the wacky nature of the plot. Though the wackiness can get a bit grating and obnoxious, but nowhere near as annoying as Professor Irwin Corey's performance. The man acts like a child that needs a heavy prescription of ritalin and it was just a bit too much for me.

One of the biggest problems with Stuck On You! is that it's just too silly for it's own good. There's laughs to be found, but they're equal to the amount of groan-worthy attempts. Where the film is helped by a mostly good cast, fairly high production values, and the occasional clever gag, it's downed by lame puns and ridiculous ideas. I'd recommend it as a rental, but it's not worth a purchase right off, especially due to a mastering error that causes most of the scene with Napoleon to be unwatchable.
