Review: Sugar Cookies
Reviewed by: Justin Channell

I'm currently working on seeing all of the early work of Lloyd Kaufman for an article I'm working on. At the time I started seeking everything out, I was lucky enough to stumble upon an original VHS release of Sugar Cookies released by VidAmerica in the late 1980s. I picked it up for $3, but when I got home, I discovered it was the R rated cut of the film. So please, take note that this review pertains to the R rated cut.

The film opens up with a kinky sex game between a porno producer named Max and one of his actresses, Alta (Lynn Lowry). The game ends in Alta's death, which Max is able to pass off as a suicide. However, Alta's lesbian lover Camilla (Mary Woronov) is well aware of how she died and goes about looking for a replacement for Alta for Max's films. Amazingly, she finds a perfect replacement in Julie - who looks exactly like Alta (and is played by Lynn Lowry). Camilla begins to mold Julie into being an exact clone of Alta, for her own reasons.

Sugar Cookies is pretty interesting little film. It was produced before Troma ever even existed and most of the crew would go on to create the abysmal piece of pre-Troma history that is Big Gus, What's The Fuss? In fact, the origin of Big Gus is seen in Sugar Cookies with a musical montage that has a song of the same title.

Sugar Cookies also feature a top-notch cast and some really great photography. However, the film lacks in the suspense and has some pretty terrible dialogue. The pacing is pretty slow, but it's to be expected from a film of this nature. T&A fans will be mighty pleased to get good peeks at Lynn Lowry and Mary Woronov. They appear nude quite often and I'm sure they appear nude even more in the X rated cut.

While not required viewing, Sugar Cookies is still a pretty good film. Lloyd Kaufman completists or fans of Lynn Lowry and Mary Woronov should definately give it a peek.
