I first saw Surf Nazis Must Die when I was in Grade 6 or 7. I had known
about Troma before then, growing up watching The Toxic Crusaders and having
seen The Toxic Avenger and The Toxic Avenger Part II when I was in Grade 5.
Any ways, it was about a gang of Surf Nazis who went around the town
terrrorizing the citizens and conquering the other gangs across the
futuristic wasteland. They end up killing this guy named Leroy, and Leroy's
Momma swears revenge. The very first time I watched Surf Nazis I absolutely
hated it. I thought it sucked.
Man, was I wrong. About a year ago, I decided to watch it again, just to
refresh my memory and to give it a second chance. This movie just gets
better and better after each viewing! It's a great movie. Peter George, the
director, has created a moive that has so many underlying tones that point
to today's society. If you look at it closely there's the messages of racial
prejiduce, society's views on teenagers, and how society labels and
stereotypes people.
This film is a great action-packed B-movie. It has all the elements;
violence, sex, gore. But what sets this aside from other B-movies is its
intelligence; this movie has a heart and a soul and when Leroy's Momma gets
out there after Adolf and Eva and the rest of the Surf Nazis, there's hell
to pay. Also, what sets this movie aside from the B-movie category is its
beautiful cinematography and the musical score. The surf scenes are
amazingly shot. And the element that makes this film really stand out is the
score, it totally sets the mood. Jon McCallum's music is amazing!
Overall, this movie is a damn good Troma movie. If you have seen it, but
only once, and hated it I suggest you watch it again. Look for the
underlying layers, think of its relevence to today's society, listen to the
amazing score. If your seeing it for the first time, well I hope you enjoy
it. SURF NAZIS MUST DIE!
