Review: Tromeo & Juliet

In 1996, after visiting William Shakespeare's grave, Lloyd Kaufman decided it was time Troma took it's stab at the 9th grade English staple Romeo and Juliet. What came out was what is arguably Troma's best film.

The storyline is essentially the same, a boy and a girl fall in love, only to discover they are from the feuding families. However, Troma adds all of the car crashes, kinky sex, body piercings, blood, and three foot long penis monsters that Shakespeare forgot to put in his version!

Tromeo and Juliet stands as my favorite Troma film, as it does for many. I've noticed that the film even appeals to the most hardcore Troma haters that I've encounted(as stated in a review quote on the DVD cover which reads "Not just for Troma junkies!"). After reading the original story in my english class, I was so tempted to get a copy for my teacher. Then I remembered I'd end up having her for AP English for the last two years of high school, so I decided I'd better wait.

The script shows why James Gunn ended making big: because it's very good and definately better than his Scooby-Doo script. The cast is one of the best in Troma history, with Will Keenan, Jane Jensen, Debbie Rochon, Valentine Miele, and Steven Blackeheart shining the most.

Very highly recommended, especially to Troma fans(obviously), anyone who read Shakespeare's original, and those who thought the Baz Luhrman adaptation sucked horribly.
